There are programs available in or near Columbus that cater to both methadone and buprenorphine clients only, drugs which are dispensed in what is called opioid maintenance therapy. Methadone is a full opioid agonist the same as heroin, and buprenorphine is a partial agonist, meaning the same neural receptors which cause an individual to feel high from morphine or heroin are activated by these two drugs so therefore an opiate dependent client will ideally not engage in drug seeking behavior and won't have cravings and withdrawal. There are risks of side effects, drug interactions, and even addiction and overdose with both buprenorphine and methadone, which is why they are highly controlled and can only be prescribed in a clinical setting.
Methadone and buprenorphine clients are on these medications daily so they don't experience withdrawal symptoms, etc. but ideally at a dose which isn't at the same time causing them to feel high. Euphoria occurs at at higher dosages, more significantly with methadone than buprenorphine. At centers which treat methadone and buprenorphine clients only, actual rehabilitation activities and therapies are generally limited beyond managing the medication and the main treatment goal is to handle the physical symptoms of their dependence. Some programs do provide a limited amount of counseling and therapy as auxiliary services, and it is encouraged.
