The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, "SAMHSA" for short, is the government agency in charge of health efforts to promote the behavioral health of the United States. One of its obligations is the oversight of opioid rehabilitation facilities, which are programs that offer medication-assisted treatment (MAT) to people who are experiencing opioid addiction and dependency. Medicine administered are drugs such as methadone, buprenorphine and other drugs which help curb cravings and withdrawal for opioid dependent clients. SAMSHA certified opioid rehabilitation facilities in Independence are programs who are legally allowed to give out the drugs used in MAT being they remain certified and always maintain the necessary requirements. One of these requirements is that MAT clients must also receive ancillary services in addition to medicine such as psychotherapy, behavioral therapy or counseling.

An opioid rehabilitation center can receive initial certification while working towards becoming fully accredited, however, are required to get their full accreditation in a year. Opioid rehabilitation programs accredited by SAMSHA need to get licensed also by their own state. In addition, they need to list themselves with the Drug Enforcement Administration through a local DEA branch. Once an opioid rehabilitation program is certified, it must be re-certified each year or every three years contingent upon the type of accreditation it has been given.
