Clients referred from the court for drug or alcohol treatment are usually referred because they are being granted a chance to try their hand at treatment in lieu of jail time, other charges, fines, etc. Although this is most common among first time offenders, it can occur at any time such as while someone is being held in jail. There are different types of programs that criminal justice clients can be referred to, and this all depends on which programs are attainable in New Bavaria and the type of drug or alcohol the person requires treatment for.
There are rehab facilities that work exclusively with the courts to administer to this specific type of clientele, and are usually state or federally funded or are available at no cost or very little cost to the client. Additionally, there are also private drug recovery centers that may be accepted by the court if there is a specific type of treatment that the client requires or prefers that a state-funded facility can't fulfill. The defendant's attorney can propose such options to the judge for permission. There are even substance abuse recovery programs that provide services from the jails themselves, where clients are sometimes in a better position for reduced sentences or other benefits when engaging in addiction rehabilitation services while serving their time for a drug related offense or a DUI/DWI.
