The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, "SAMHSA" for short, is the government agency responsible for health efforts to advance the behavioral health of the United States. One of its duties is the oversight of opioid rehabilitation facilities, which are centers that offer medication-assisted treatment (MAT) to people who are in the midst of opioid dependency and addiction. Medications prescribed are drugs such as methadone, buprenorphine and other drugs which stop withdrawal and curb cravings for opioid dependent clients. SAMSHA certified opioid treatment programs in New Lebanon are programs which are legally allowed to give out the medications used in MAT as long as they remain certified and always maintain the necessary requirements. A requirement that MAT clients must also receive auxiliary services aside from medicine like psychotherapy, behavioral therapy or counseling.

An opioid rehabilitation facility can receive basic certification while working towards becoming fully accredited, however, are required to get their full accreditation in a year. Opioid rehabilitation facilities authorized by SAMSHA must be licensed by the state in which they operate. Likewise, they must register with the Drug Enforcement Administration through a local DEA branch. Once an opioid rehab facility is approved to operate, it must be re-certified every year or every 3 years contingent upon the type of accreditation it has been given.
