The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, "SAMHSA" for short, is the government department responsible for efforts to promote the mental health of the United States. One of its responsibilities is the administering of opioid treatment facilities, which are programs who offer medication-assisted treatment (MAT) to individuals who are experiencing opioid addiction and dependency. Drug given are drugs such as methadone, buprenorphine and other drugs that stop withdrawal and curb cravings for opioid addicted individuals. SAMSHA certified opioid rehabilitation programs in Patriot are programs who are officially allowed to distribute the medicines used in MAT as long as they maintain their certification and continue to meet certain requirements. A requirement that MAT individuals must also receive auxiliary benefits aside from medicine like psychotherapy, behavioral therapy or counseling.

An opioid rehabilitation center can receive initial certification while they endeavor to get their full accreditation, however, are required to get their full accreditation in a year. Opioid treatment programs authorized by SAMSHA need to get licensed also by their own state.
