The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, "SAMHSA" for short, is the government department in charge of efforts to promote the behavioral health of the nation. One of its duties is the supervision of opioid rehab facilities, which are centers that provide medication-assisted treatment (MAT) to clients who are experiencing opioid addiction and dependency. Medicine prescribed are drugs such as methadone, buprenorphine and other drugs which stop curb cravings and withdrawal for opioid addicted people. SAMSHA certified opioid rehabilitation programs in Russia are programs who are legally allowed to dispense the medicines used in MAT as long as they maintain their certification and continue to meet certain requirements. An opioid treatment facility can get their initial certification while working towards becoming fully accredited, but must become fully accredited within a year. Opioid rehabilitation facilities authorized by SAMSHA need to get licensed also by their own state. In addition, they need to list themselves with the Drug Enforcement Administration through a local DEA office. Once an opioid treatment center is certified, it must be re-certified every year or every 3 years depending on the type of accreditation that was given.
