There are substance abuse programs available in or near Big Cabin which service both methadone and buprenorphine clients only, controlled medications which are dispensed in what is known as opioid maintenance therapy. Methadone is a full opioid agonist just like heroin, and buprenorphine is a partial agonist, which means the same neural receptors that make a person feel high from heroin or prescription pain killers are stimulated by these two drugs so therefore an opioid dependent client will instead not engage in drug seeking behavior and won't experience cravings and withdrawal. There are dangers with side effects, drug interactions, and even overdose with both methadone and buprenorphine, which is why they are highly regulated and can only be prescribed in a clinical setting.
Methadone and buprenorphine clients take these medications regularly so they don't experience cravings, withdrawal, etc. but ideally at a dosage which isn't also making them feel high. Euphoria can be experienced at at higher dosages, more so with methadone than buprenorphine. At programs that treat methadone and buprenorphine clients only, treatment therapies are limited beyond this and the main treatment objective is to treat the physical symptoms of their dependence. Some programs do provide a small amount of counseling and group therapy as supplementary treatment, and this is recommended and encouraged.
