There are substance abuse programs available in or near Checotah that cater to both methadone and buprenorphine clients only, drugs that are used in what is known as opioid maintenance therapy. Methadone is a full opioid agonist just like heroin, and buprenorphine is a partial agonist, meaning the same nerve cell receptors which cause an individual to feel high from heroin or prescription pain killers are stimulated by these two drugs so that an opioid dependent client will ideally not become involved in addict behavior and won't experience cravings and withdrawal. There are dangers with drug interactions, side effects, and even overdose with both buprenorphine and methadone, which is why they are heavily regulated and can only be dispensed in a clinical setting.
Methadone and buprenorphine clients are on these medications consistently so they don't experience cravings, withdrawal, etc. but hopefully at a dose which isn't at the same time causing them to feel high. Euphoria occurs at at higher dosages, more significantly with methadone than buprenorphine. At centers which treat methadone and buprenorphine clients only, treatment therapies are generally limited beyond this and the main treatment goal is to handle the physical symptoms of their dependence. Some programs do provide a small amount of counseling and group therapy as secondary treatment, and this is recommended and encouraged.
