There are programs available in or near Hugo that cater to both methadone and buprenorphine clients only, medications which are administered in what is called opioid maintenance therapy. Methadone is a full opioid agonist the same as heroin, and buprenorphine is a partial agonist, which means the same nerve cell receptors that make a person feel high from heroin or prescription pain killers are stimulated by these two drugs so that an opioid dependent client will ideally not engage in drug seeking behavior and won't have cravings and withdrawal. There are risks of drug interactions, side effects, and even overdose with both buprenorphine and methadone, which is why they are highly regulated and can only be prescribed in a clinical setting.
Buprenorphine and methadone clients take these medications consistently so they don't experience cravings, withdrawal, etc. but hopefully at a dosage which isn't at the same time making them feel euphoria. Euphoria is possible at at higher dosages, more significantly with methadone than buprenorphine. At clinics that treat methadone and buprenorphine clients only, actual rehabilitation activities and therapies are limited beyond managing the medication and the main treatment goal is to treat the physical symptoms of their dependence. Some centers do provide a limited amount of counseling and therapy as auxiliary treatment, and this is recommended and encouraged.
