Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Alcohol and Drug Treatment Programs - Coquille, OR.

Vivitrol is a drug mainly administered to prevent drug or alcohol dependency and relapse, and is administered specifically for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription medications. Vivitrol is an extended release version of the drug Naltrexone, which one can get via a monthly injection. It is not addictive, and is what is called an antagonist. When someone is adminstered Vivitrol, it blocks the receptors that would usually be triggered by alcohol or opioids, so when someone drinks alcohol or tries to get high on opioids they essentially cannot get high or drunk.

There are particular precautions that need to be taken before someone is administered Vivitrol. First off, someone who with the intent to start Vivitrol needs to have abstained from opioids for at least seven to ten days. This is including people who are participating in opioid maintenance therapy and are taking medications such as Buprenorphine or Methadone. For a heroin abuser or someone who has been on Methadone for several years, abrupt cessation can be brutal, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for a minimum of a week if they want to start Vivitrol.

These drugs must be used in conjunction with an addiction treatment program in Coquille that also includes medical supervision, individual therapy, and group therapy. Speak to your doctor or therapist about how pharmacological tools can help you build the drug-free life you want.
