Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Drug and Alcohol Rehabilitation Programs - Dayton, OR.

Vivitrol is a medication used to help prevent drug or alcohol use and relapse, and is administered specifically for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription medications. Vivitrol is an extended-release type of the drug Naltrexone, which one can get via a monthly injection. It isn't addictive, and is what is known as an antagonist. When an individual is adminstered Vivitrol, it blocks the receptors that would usually be activated by opioids or alcohol, so when an individual drinks or takes opioids they essentially can't get drunk or high.

There are particular precautions that need to be taken before someone begins treatment with Vivitrol. Firstly, a client who with the intent to start Vivitrol needs to have abstained from opioids for a minimum of seven to ten days. This includes clients who are participating in opioid maintenance therapy and are taking meds like Methadone or Buprenorphine. For a heroin addict or a person who has been on Methadone for several years, quitting quickly is brutal, but withdrawal is something they will have to endure for at least seven days in order to start Vivitrol.

These meds must be used in conjunction with a treatment program in Dayton that also offers medical supervision, individual therapy, and group therapy. Talk to your therapist or Dr. about how pharmacological tools can help you maintain the drug-free life you want.
