Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Drug and Alcohol Treatment Programs - Dundee, OR.

Vivitrol is a med used to help prevent drug or alcohol use and relapse, and is used expressly for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription pain killers. Vivitrol is an extended release type of the drug Naltrexone, which is available via a monthly injection. It isn't habit forming, and is what is called an antagonist. When someone is adminstered Vivitrol, it cuts off the receptors that would normally be activated by alcohol or opioids, so when someone drinks or tries to get high on opioids they essentially can't get drunk or high.

There are certain precautions that should be be taken before an individual is administered Vivitrol. First off, a client who plans to start Vivitrol must have been off of opioids for a minimum of 7-10 days. This is including individuals who are participating in opioid maintenance therapy and are taking meds such as Buprenorphine or Methadone. For a heroin abuser or a person who has been on Methadone for a long time, abrupt cessation can be brutal, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for a minimum of 7 days if they want to start Vivitrol.

These drugs must be used in conjunction with an addiction treatment program in Dundee that also includes medical supervision, individual therapy, and group therapy. Talk with your therapist or doctor about how pharmacological tools can help you maintain the drug-free life you want.
