Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Drug and Alcohol Treatment Centers - Halsey, OR.

Vivitrol is a medication mainly administered to help prevent drug or alcohol use and relapse, and is used expressly for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription pain killers. Vivitrol is an extended-release version of the med Naltrexone, which is available through injection once a month. It isn't addictive, and is what is called an antagonist. When someone is adminstered Vivitrol, it blocks the receptors that would normally be activated by opioids or alcohol, so when an individual drinks or takes opioids they essentially cannot get drunk or high.

There are certain precautions that need to be taken before someone begins treatment with Vivitrol. Firstly, a person who with the intent to start Vivitrol needs to have abstained from opioids for at least seven to ten days. This is including people who are involved in opioid maintenance therapy and are taking medications such as Buprenorphine or Methadone. For a heroin addict or a person who has been on Methadone for several years, abrupt cessation is very difficult, but withdrawal is something they will have to endure for a minimum of 7 days if they want to begin taking Vivitrol.

These meds must be used as part of a rehab program in Halsey which also includes medical supervision, individual therapy, and group therapy. Speak to your therapist or Dr. in regards to how pharmacological tools can help you maintain the sober life you want.
