Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Drug and Alcohol Rehab Programs - Lonerock, OR.

Vivitrol is a medication mainly administered to help prevent drug or alcohol dependency and relapse, and is administered specifically for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription medications. Vivitrol is an extended release version of the drug Naltrexone, which is available through a monthly injection. It isn't addictive, and is what is known as an antagonist. When someone is adminstered Vivitrol, it blocks the receptors that would normally be triggered by alcohol or opioids, so when an individual takes a drink of alcohol or takes opioids they essentially cannot get drunk or high.

There are particular precautions that need to be taken before an individual begins treatment with Vivitrol. Firstly, a person who intends to begin Vivitrol needs to have been off of opioids for a minimum of 7-10 days. This includes clients who are participating in opioid maintenance therapy and are taking drugs such as Buprenorphine or Methadone. For a heroin addict or a person who has been on Methadone for a long time, quitting quickly can be very difficult, but withdrawal is something they will have to endure for at least a week in order to begin taking Vivitrol.

These drugs must be used as part of a treatment program in Lonerock that also offers medical supervision, individual therapy, and group therapy. Speak with your therapist or Dr. in regards to how pharmacological tools can help you maintain and build the sober life you want.
