Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Alcohol and Drug Rehab Centers - Umatilla, OR.

Vivitrol is a drug mainly administered to help prevent drug dependency and relapse, and is administered expressly for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription medications. Vivitrol is an extended-release version of the medication Naltrexone, which one can get through a monthly injection. It isn't addictive, and is what is known as an antagonist. When an individual is adminstered Vivitrol, it blocks the receptors that would normally be activated by alcohol or opioids, so when an individual drinks alcohol or tries to get high on opioids they essentially can't get drunk or high.

There are particular precautions that need to be taken before someone is administered Vivitrol. Firstly, an individual who plans to begin Vivitrol needs to have abstained from opioids for at least 7-10 days. This includes clients who are involved in opioid maintenance therapy and are being given drugs like Methadone or Buprenorphine. For a heroin addict or someone who has been on Methadone for a long time, abrupt cessation can be brutal, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for a minimum of 7 days if they want to begin taking Vivitrol.

These meds must be used as part of an addiction treatment program in Umatilla which also includes medical supervision, individual therapy, and group therapy. Speak with your therapist or Dr. about how pharmacological tools can help you maintain and build the drug and alcohol free life you want.
