Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Alcohol and Drug Treatment Centers - Akron, PA.

Vivitrol is a med used to prevent drug or alcohol abuse and relapse, and is administered expressly for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription pain killers. Vivitrol is an extended release type of the med Naltrexone, which one can get via a monthly injection. It isn't habit forming, and is what is called an antagonist. When an individual takes Vivitrol, it cuts off the receptors that would normally be triggered by opioids or alcohol, so when an individual drinks or tries to get high on opioids they essentially can't get drunk or high.

There are certain precautions that should be be taken before someone is administered Vivitrol. Firstly, someone who intends to start Vivitrol needs to have abstained from opioids for a minimum of seven to ten days. This is including clients who are participating in opioid maintenance therapy and are being given meds such as Methadone or Buprenorphine. For a heroin addict or a person who has been taking Methadone for a long time, abrupt cessation can be brutal, but withdrawal is something they will have to endure for a minimum of seven days in order to begin taking Vivitrol.

These meds must be used in conjunction with a rehab program in Akron which also includes medical supervision, individual therapy, and group therapy. Talk with your doctor or therapist about how pharmacological tools can help you maintain and build the sober life you want.
