Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Drug and Alcohol Rehabilitation Centers - Allentown, PA.

Vivitrol is a drug used to prevent drug use and relapse, and is administered expressly for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription pain killers. Vivitrol is an extended release version of the med Naltrexone, that is available through injection once a month. It isn't addictive, and is what is known as an antagonist. When an individual is adminstered Vivitrol, it cuts off the receptors that would usually be triggered by opioids or alcohol, so when someone takes a drink of alcohol or tries to get high on opioids they essentially can't get high or drunk.

There are certain safety measures that need to be taken before someone begins treatment with Vivitrol. First off, someone who intends to start Vivitrol must have been off of opioids for at least seven to ten days. This is including clients who are involved in opioid maintenance therapy and are taking medications such as Buprenorphine or Methadone. For a heroin addict or someone who has been on Methadone for several years, quitting quickly is very difficult, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for at least seven days if they want to start Vivitrol.

These drugs must be used in conjunction with a rehab program in Allentown which also includes medical supervision, individual therapy, and group therapy. Speak with your therapist or doctor about how pharmacological tools can help you maintain and build the drug and alcohol free life you want.
