Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Alcohol and Drug Rehab Facilities - Blue Bell, PA.

Vivitrol is a drug mainly administered to help prevent drug abuse and relapse, and is administered expressly for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription medications. Vivitrol is an extended-release version of the medication Naltrexone, which is available via injection once a month. It isn't habit forming, and is what is known as an antagonist. When someone takes Vivitrol, it cuts off the receptors that would usually be triggered by opioids or alcohol, so when an individual takes a drink of alcohol or takes opioids they basically cannot get high or drunk.

There are certain safety measures that need to be taken before an individual begins treatment with Vivitrol. Firstly, a client who with the intent to begin Vivitrol needs to have abstained from opioids for at least seven to ten days. This includes individuals who are involved in opioid maintenance therapy and are being given meds like Methadone or Buprenorphine. For a heroin abuser or someone who has been taking Methadone for a long time, abrupt cessation can be very difficult, but withdrawal is something they will have to endure for at least a week in order to begin taking Vivitrol.

These medications must be used as part of a treatment program in Blue Bell which also offers medical supervision, individual therapy, and group therapy. Talk to your therapist or Dr. about how pharmacological aids can help you maintain the drug and alcohol free life you want.
