Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Drug and Alcohol Rehab Centers - Bobtown, PA.

Vivitrol is a medication used to prevent drug or alcohol use and relapse, and is administered expressly for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription pain killers. Vivitrol is an extended release version of the drug Naltrexone, which is available through a monthly injection. It is not addictive, and is what is called an antagonist. When someone takes Vivitrol, it cuts off the receptors that would usually be triggered by alcohol or opioids, so when an individual takes a drink of alcohol or takes opioids they essentially cannot get high or drunk.

There are certain precautions that need to be taken before someone is administered Vivitrol. First off, someone who with the intent to start Vivitrol needs to have been off of opioids for at least seven to ten days. This includes individuals who are participating in opioid maintenance therapy and are being given medications like Buprenorphine or Methadone. For a heroin addict or a person who has been taking Methadone for a long time, abrupt cessation is brutal, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for a minimum of 7 days if they want to start Vivitrol.

These medications must be used as part of a rehab program in Bobtown that also includes medical supervision, individual therapy, and group therapy. Speak to your therapist or doctor in regards to how pharmacological tools can help you maintain the drug and alcohol free life you want.
