Vivitrol is a med used to prevent drug or alcohol use and relapse, and is used specifically for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription medications. Vivitrol is an extended release type of the medication Naltrexone, which is available through a monthly injection. It is not habit forming, and is what is called an antagonist. When someone takes Vivitrol, it cuts off the receptors that would usually be triggered by alcohol or opioids, so when an individual drinks alcohol or takes opioids they essentially can't get drunk or high.
There are certain precautions that need to be taken before someone is administered Vivitrol. First off, a person who plans to begin Vivitrol needs to have abstained from opioids for a minimum of seven to ten days. This is including individuals who are participating in opioid maintenance therapy and are being given meds like Methadone or Buprenorphine. For a heroin abuser or someone who has been on Methadone for several years, quitting quickly can be very difficult, but withdrawal is something they will have to endure for a minimum of a week if they want to start Vivitrol.
These meds must be used in conjunction with a rehab program in Clarks Summit that also offers medical supervision, individual therapy, and group therapy. Talk with your therapist or Dr. about how pharmacological tools can help you maintain and build the drug and alcohol free life you want.
