The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, "SAMHSA" for short, is the government agency responsible for efforts to promote the behavioral health of the nation. One of its responsibilities is the supervision of opioid rehab facilities, which are programs which offer medication-assisted treatment (MAT) to clients who are in the midst of opioid addiction and dependency. Medications prescribed are drugs such as buprenorphine, methadone, and other drugs which stop withdrawal and curb cravings for opioid addicted people. SAMSHA certified opioid rehab programs in Clifton Heights are programs that are legally allowed to distribute the medications used in MAT as long as they maintain their certification and continue to meet certain requirements. One of these requirements is that MAT individuals must also get auxiliary services aside from medication such as psychotherapy, behavioral therapy or counseling.

An opioid rehabilitation center can get their initial approval documentation while they endeavor to get their full accreditation, however, are required to get their full accreditation in a year. Opioid rehab facilities authorized by SAMSHA must be licensed by the state in which they operate. Likewise, they need to list themselves with the Drug Enforcement Administration via a local DEA office. Once an opioid treatment center is certified, it must be re-certified every year or every three years contingent upon the type of accreditation it has been given.
