Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Drug and Alcohol Treatment Facilities - Conestoga, PA.

Vivitrol is a med mainly administered to prevent drug or alcohol dependency and relapse, and is used specifically for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription pain killers. Vivitrol is an extended release version of the med Naltrexone, which one can get via a monthly injection. It isn't habit forming, and is what is called an antagonist. When an individual injects Vivitrol, it cuts off the receptors that would normally be activated by opioids or alcohol, so when someone drinks or takes opioids they essentially cannot get high or drunk.

There are particular safety measures that should be be taken before someone begins treatment with Vivitrol. First off, someone who with the intent to begin Vivitrol needs to have been off of opioids for at least 7-10 days. This includes individuals who are participating in opioid maintenance therapy and are taking meds such as Buprenorphine or Methadone. For a heroin addict or a person who has been taking Methadone for several years, quitting quickly is brutal, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for at least seven days in order to start Vivitrol.

These meds must be used in conjunction with a rehab program in Conestoga which also offers individual therapy, group therapy and medical supervision. Speak to your doctor or therapist about how pharmacological tools can help you live the sober life you want.
