Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Alcohol and Drug Rehabilitation Facilities - Cyclone, PA.

Vivitrol is a med used to help prevent drug dependency and relapse, and is used expressly for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription medications. Vivitrol is an extended-release version of the med Naltrexone, that is available via a monthly injection. It isn't addictive, and is what is called an antagonist. When someone is adminstered Vivitrol, it blocks the receptors that would normally be activated by opioids or alcohol, so when an individual drinks alcohol or takes opioids they essentially can't get high or drunk.

There are particular precautions that need to be taken before someone is administered Vivitrol. First off, someone who intends to begin Vivitrol needs to have abstained from opioids for a minimum of 7-10 days. This includes clients who are involved in opioid maintenance therapy and are being given drugs such as Methadone or Buprenorphine. For a heroin abuser or someone who has been on Methadone for a long time, quitting quickly is very difficult, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for at least a week in order to start Vivitrol.

These meds must be used in conjunction with a treatment program in Cyclone that also offers individual therapy, group therapy and medical supervision. Speak to your therapist or doctor about how pharmacological aids can help you build and maintain the sober life you want.
