Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Alcohol and Drug Treatment Programs - Dunlo, PA.

Vivitrol is a drug used to help prevent drug use and relapse, and is used specifically for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription pain killers. Vivitrol is an extended release type of the medication Naltrexone, that one can get through a monthly injection. It is not habit forming, and is what is known as an antagonist. When an individual is adminstered Vivitrol, it blocks the receptors that would normally be triggered by opioids or alcohol, so when someone drinks or takes opioids they basically can't get high or drunk.

There are particular precautions that need to be taken before someone is administered Vivitrol. First off, an individual who plans to begin Vivitrol needs to have abstained from opioids for at least 7-10 days. This includes people who are participating in opioid maintenance therapy and are taking meds like Methadone or Buprenorphine. For a heroin abuser or a person who has been on Methadone for a long time, abrupt cessation can be very difficult, but withdrawal is something they will have to endure for a minimum of 7 days if they want to begin taking Vivitrol.

These meds must be used as part of a treatment program in Dunlo which also includes medical supervision, individual therapy, and group therapy. Talk with your therapist or doctor about how pharmacological aids can help you maintain the drug-free life you want.
