Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Drug and Alcohol Rehab Programs - Elgin, PA.

Vivitrol is a med used to help prevent drug use and relapse, and is administered specifically for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription pain killers. Vivitrol is an extended-release type of the drug Naltrexone, which one can get via a monthly injection. It is not addictive, and is what is called an antagonist. When an individual is adminstered Vivitrol, it cuts off the receptors that would usually be triggered by alcohol or opioids, so when an individual drinks or takes opioids they essentially cannot get high or drunk.

There are certain safety measures that should be be taken before an individual begins treatment with Vivitrol. Firstly, a person who intends to begin Vivitrol must have abstained from opioids for at least 7-10 days. This includes individuals who are participating in opioid maintenance therapy and are taking medications such as Methadone or Buprenorphine. For a heroin abuser or someone who has been taking Methadone for several years, abrupt cessation is very difficult, but withdrawal is something they will have to endure for at least seven days in order to begin taking Vivitrol.

These drugs must be used in conjunction with a treatment program in Elgin that also offers individual therapy, group therapy and medical supervision. Talk with your doctor or therapist in regards to how pharmacological tools can help you maintain the sober life you want.
