Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Drug and Alcohol Rehabilitation Centers - Exton, PA.

Vivitrol is a medication mainly administered to prevent drug abuse and relapse, and is administered expressly for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription pain killers. Vivitrol is an extended release version of the medication Naltrexone, that is available via injection once a month. It isn't addictive, and is what is known as an antagonist. When someone injects Vivitrol, it cuts off the receptors that would normally be activated by opioids or alcohol, so when someone drinks or takes opioids they basically cannot get high or drunk.

There are particular precautions that need to be taken before an individual is administered Vivitrol. First off, a client who with the intent to start Vivitrol needs to have abstained from opioids for a minimum of seven to ten days. This includes clients who are participating in opioid maintenance therapy and are being given meds like Buprenorphine or Methadone. For a heroin abuser or someone who has been on Methadone for a long time, abrupt cessation can be very difficult, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for a minimum of a week in order to begin taking Vivitrol.

These medications must be used in conjunction with a rehab program in Exton which also includes medical supervision, individual therapy, and group therapy. Speak with your doctor or therapist in regards to how pharmacological tools can help you maintain and build the drug and alcohol free life you want.
