Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Alcohol and Drug Rehab Facilities - Falls, PA.

Vivitrol is a medication used to help prevent drug or alcohol dependency and relapse, and is administered specifically for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription pain killers. Vivitrol is an extended release version of the med Naltrexone, that is available via injection once a month. It is not habit forming, and is what is known as an antagonist. When someone injects Vivitrol, it blocks the receptors that would usually be activated by opioids or alcohol, so when someone drinks or takes opioids they basically can't get drunk or high.

There are certain precautions that need to be taken before someone begins treatment with Vivitrol. First off, a person who intends to start Vivitrol needs to have abstained from opioids for at least 7-10 days. This is including individuals who are involved in opioid maintenance therapy and are being given drugs such as Methadone or Buprenorphine. For a heroin abuser or someone who has been on Methadone for several years, abrupt cessation can be very difficult, but withdrawal is something they will have to endure for at least seven days if they want to begin taking Vivitrol.

These meds must be used in conjunction with a rehab program in Falls which also offers individual therapy, group therapy and medical supervision. Talk to your therapist or doctor about how pharmacological tools can help you live the sober life you want.
