Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Drug and Alcohol Rehab Facilities - Fleetwood, PA.

Vivitrol is a drug used to help prevent drug or alcohol abuse and relapse, and is administered expressly for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription pain killers. Vivitrol is an extended release version of the med Naltrexone, which is available via injection once a month. It is not habit forming, and is what is known as an antagonist. When an individual injects Vivitrol, it blocks the receptors that would usually be activated by alcohol or opioids, so when an individual drinks alcohol or tries to get high on opioids they basically can't get high or drunk.

There are certain precautions that need to be taken before an individual begins treatment with Vivitrol. First off, a client who intends to begin Vivitrol needs to have been off of opioids for at least 7-10 days. This includes individuals who are participating in opioid maintenance therapy and are being given meds such as Buprenorphine or Methadone. For a heroin abuser or a person who has been on Methadone for several years, quitting quickly can be brutal, but withdrawal is something they will have to endure for a minimum of 7 days if they want to start Vivitrol.

These meds must be used as part of an addiction treatment program in Fleetwood which also offers medical supervision, individual therapy, and group therapy. Talk to your therapist or doctor in regards to how pharmacological tools can help you maintain the sober life you want.
