Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Alcohol and Drug Rehabilitation Facilities - Gaines, PA.

Vivitrol is a med mainly administered to help prevent drug abuse and relapse, and is used specifically for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription medications. Vivitrol is an extended release version of the drug Naltrexone, that is available via injection once a month. It isn't habit forming, and is what is called an antagonist. When an individual is adminstered Vivitrol, it cuts off the receptors that would normally be triggered by alcohol or opioids, so when someone drinks or tries to get high on opioids they basically can't get drunk or high.

There are certain safety measures that should be be taken before someone is administered Vivitrol. First off, a client who plans to start Vivitrol must have been off of opioids for a minimum of 7-10 days. This is including clients who are participating in opioid maintenance therapy and are being given medications such as Buprenorphine or Methadone. For a heroin abuser or a person who has been taking Methadone for several years, abrupt cessation is brutal, but withdrawal is something they will have to endure for at least seven days in order to start Vivitrol.

These meds must be used in conjunction with a rehab program in Gaines which also includes individual therapy, group therapy and medical supervision. Speak to your therapist or doctor about how pharmacological tools can help you build the drug and alcohol free life you want.
