Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Drug and Alcohol Treatment Facilities - Greenock, PA.

Vivitrol is a drug mainly administered to prevent drug or alcohol dependency and relapse, and is administered expressly for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription medications. Vivitrol is an extended-release version of the drug Naltrexone, that one can get through injection once a month. It is not addictive, and is what is known as an antagonist. When someone is adminstered Vivitrol, it cuts off the receptors that would normally be triggered by opioids or alcohol, so when an individual drinks alcohol or takes opioids they essentially can't get drunk or high.

There are certain precautions that should be be taken before an individual is administered Vivitrol. First off, a person who with the intent to begin Vivitrol must have abstained from opioids for a minimum of seven to ten days. This is including clients who are participating in opioid maintenance therapy and are taking drugs such as Methadone or Buprenorphine. For a heroin addict or someone who has been taking Methadone for a long time, quitting quickly can be brutal, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for at least a week if they want to begin taking Vivitrol.

These drugs must be used as part of a rehab program in Greenock that also offers individual therapy, group therapy and medical supervision. Talk to your therapist or Dr. about how pharmacological aids can help you build the sober life you want.
