Vivitrol is a drug mainly administered to help prevent drug use and relapse, and is used specifically for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription medications. Vivitrol is an extended release version of the medication Naltrexone, which is available through a monthly injection. It isn't addictive, and is what is known as an antagonist. When someone takes Vivitrol, it cuts off the receptors that would normally be triggered by alcohol or opioids, so when someone drinks or takes opioids they basically can't get drunk or high.
There are certain safety measures that should be be taken before an individual begins treatment with Vivitrol. First off, a person who with the intent to begin Vivitrol must have abstained from opioids for a minimum of seven to ten days. This includes clients who are involved in opioid maintenance therapy and are taking drugs like Methadone or Buprenorphine. For a heroin abuser or a person who has been taking Methadone for several years, abrupt cessation can be very difficult, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for at least 7 days if they want to start Vivitrol.
These medications must be used as part of a treatment program in Hadley which also includes medical supervision, individual therapy, and group therapy. Speak to your therapist or Dr. about how pharmacological tools can help you build and maintain the sober life you want.
