Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Alcohol and Drug Rehabilitation Centers - Hermitage, PA.

Vivitrol is a med used to prevent drug or alcohol use and relapse, and is administered specifically for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription pain killers. Vivitrol is an extended-release version of the medication Naltrexone, that one can get via a monthly injection. It isn't addictive, and is what is known as an antagonist. When someone is adminstered Vivitrol, it cuts off the receptors that would normally be activated by opioids or alcohol, so when someone drinks or tries to get high on opioids they basically can't get drunk or high.

There are certain safety measures that should be be taken before someone is administered Vivitrol. Firstly, a person who intends to start Vivitrol must have abstained from opioids for a minimum of seven to ten days. This includes individuals who are participating in opioid maintenance therapy and are being given meds like Buprenorphine or Methadone. For a heroin abuser or a person who has been on Methadone for several years, abrupt cessation is brutal, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for a minimum of 7 days in order to start Vivitrol.

These medications must be used in conjunction with a rehab program in Hermitage that also includes individual therapy, group therapy and medical supervision. Speak to your doctor or therapist in regards to how pharmacological aids can help you maintain and build the drug-free life you want.
