Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Alcohol and Drug Rehabilitation Programs - Highspire, PA.

Vivitrol is a medication mainly administered to help prevent drug abuse and relapse, and is used expressly for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription pain killers. Vivitrol is an extended release version of the medication Naltrexone, that one can get through injection once a month. It isn't addictive, and is what is known as an antagonist. When an individual is adminstered Vivitrol, it blocks the receptors that would normally be triggered by opioids or alcohol, so when someone drinks alcohol or takes opioids they basically cannot get high or drunk.

There are certain precautions that need to be taken before someone begins treatment with Vivitrol. Firstly, someone who plans to begin Vivitrol needs to have been off of opioids for a minimum of seven to ten days. This is including people who are involved in opioid maintenance therapy and are being given drugs such as Methadone or Buprenorphine. For a heroin addict or a person who has been on Methadone for a long time, quitting quickly can be very difficult, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for a minimum of 7 days if they want to start Vivitrol.

These drugs must be used as part of an addiction treatment program in Highspire that also includes medical supervision, individual therapy, and group therapy. Talk to your therapist or Dr. in regards to how pharmacological tools can help you build the sober life you want.
