Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Drug and Alcohol Rehabilitation Centers - Julian, PA.

Vivitrol is a medication used to prevent drug or alcohol use and relapse, and is used expressly for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription medications. Vivitrol is an extended-release version of the drug Naltrexone, that is available via injection once a month. It is not addictive, and is what is called an antagonist. When an individual is adminstered Vivitrol, it blocks the receptors that would usually be triggered by alcohol or opioids, so when someone drinks or takes opioids they essentially can't get drunk or high.

There are certain safety measures that need to be taken before someone is administered Vivitrol. First off, someone who with the intent to begin Vivitrol needs to have been off of opioids for at least 7-10 days. This is including clients who are involved in opioid maintenance therapy and are taking meds like Buprenorphine or Methadone. For a heroin addict or someone who has been on Methadone for several years, quitting quickly is brutal, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for at least seven days if they want to begin taking Vivitrol.

These meds must be used as part of a treatment program in Julian that also offers medical supervision, individual therapy, and group therapy. Talk with your therapist or Dr. about how pharmacological tools can help you maintain and build the sober life you want.
