Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Drug and Alcohol Rehab Programs - Kunkletown, PA.

Vivitrol is a med mainly administered to help prevent drug use and relapse, and is used specifically for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription medications. Vivitrol is an extended-release version of the medication Naltrexone, which one can get via a monthly injection. It isn't habit forming, and is what is called an antagonist. When someone injects Vivitrol, it blocks the receptors that would normally be activated by opioids or alcohol, so when an individual drinks alcohol or takes opioids they basically cannot get drunk or high.

There are certain precautions that need to be taken before an individual is administered Vivitrol. First off, a client who intends to begin Vivitrol must have been off of opioids for a minimum of seven to ten days. This includes individuals who are participating in opioid maintenance therapy and are taking meds like Methadone or Buprenorphine. For a heroin abuser or a person who has been on Methadone for several years, abrupt cessation is very difficult, but withdrawal is something they will have to endure for a minimum of 7 days in order to begin taking Vivitrol.

These meds must be used in conjunction with a treatment program in Kunkletown which also includes individual therapy, group therapy and medical supervision. Speak with your therapist or Dr. about how pharmacological aids can help you maintain the drug and alcohol free life you want.
