Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Drug and Alcohol Treatment Centers - Kutztown, PA.

Vivitrol is a med used to help prevent drug or alcohol use and relapse, and is used specifically for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription medications. Vivitrol is an extended release version of the med Naltrexone, that is available via injection once a month. It is not addictive, and is what is called an antagonist. When someone takes Vivitrol, it blocks the receptors that would normally be activated by opioids or alcohol, so when someone takes a drink of alcohol or takes opioids they basically cannot get high or drunk.

There are particular safety measures that should be be taken before someone begins treatment with Vivitrol. First off, a client who intends to start Vivitrol needs to have been off of opioids for a minimum of 7-10 days. This includes individuals who are involved in opioid maintenance therapy and are taking medications like Methadone or Buprenorphine. For a heroin addict or someone who has been taking Methadone for several years, abrupt cessation is brutal, but withdrawal is something they will have to endure for a minimum of seven days if they want to begin taking Vivitrol.

These medications must be used in conjunction with a treatment program in Kutztown which also includes medical supervision, individual therapy, and group therapy. Talk to your therapist or doctor about how pharmacological tools can help you live the sober life you want.
