Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Alcohol and Drug Rehabilitation Facilities - Lebanon, PA.

Vivitrol is a med used to help prevent drug or alcohol abuse and relapse, and is administered specifically for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription pain killers. Vivitrol is an extended-release type of the med Naltrexone, which one can get through injection once a month. It is not addictive, and is what is known as an antagonist. When someone is adminstered Vivitrol, it cuts off the receptors that would normally be activated by opioids or alcohol, so when someone drinks or tries to get high on opioids they basically can't get high or drunk.

There are particular precautions that should be be taken before someone is administered Vivitrol. First off, an individual who intends to begin Vivitrol must have abstained from opioids for a minimum of seven to ten days. This includes people who are participating in opioid maintenance therapy and are being given medications such as Buprenorphine or Methadone. For a heroin addict or someone who has been taking Methadone for several years, abrupt cessation can be brutal, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for at least a week if they want to start Vivitrol.

These medications must be used as part of a treatment program in Lebanon that also includes individual therapy, group therapy and medical supervision. Speak with your therapist or doctor about how pharmacological tools can help you live the sober life you want.
