Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Alcohol and Drug Rehabilitation Centers - Mansfield, PA.

Vivitrol is a drug mainly administered to help prevent drug abuse and relapse, and is used expressly for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription medications. Vivitrol is an extended-release version of the drug Naltrexone, that is available via injection once a month. It isn't addictive, and is what is called an antagonist. When an individual injects Vivitrol, it cuts off the receptors that would usually be activated by alcohol or opioids, so when someone drinks alcohol or takes opioids they essentially can't get drunk or high.

There are certain precautions that need to be taken before someone is administered Vivitrol. Firstly, a person who intends to begin Vivitrol must have been off of opioids for a minimum of seven to ten days. This is including people who are involved in opioid maintenance therapy and are taking medications such as Buprenorphine or Methadone. For a heroin abuser or a person who has been on Methadone for several years, quitting quickly is very difficult, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for at least a week in order to start Vivitrol.

These drugs must be used as part of an addiction treatment program in Mansfield that also offers individual therapy, group therapy and medical supervision. Speak to your therapist or Dr. in regards to how pharmacological tools can help you build and maintain the sober life you want.
