Vivitrol is a med mainly administered to prevent drug abuse and relapse, and is administered specifically for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription medications. Vivitrol is an extended release version of the med Naltrexone, that one can get via injection once a month. It is not habit forming, and is what is called an antagonist. When an individual injects Vivitrol, it blocks the receptors that would usually be triggered by opioids or alcohol, so when someone takes a drink of alcohol or tries to get high on opioids they essentially can't get drunk or high.
There are particular safety measures that need to be taken before an individual is administered Vivitrol. First off, a person who plans to begin Vivitrol needs to have been off of opioids for at least 7-10 days. This includes people who are involved in opioid maintenance therapy and are taking meds like Methadone or Buprenorphine. For a heroin abuser or a person who has been taking Methadone for a long time, abrupt cessation is brutal, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for at least 7 days in order to begin taking Vivitrol.
