Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Alcohol and Drug Rehabilitation Facilities - Mount Union, PA.

Vivitrol is a med mainly administered to prevent drug or alcohol use and relapse, and is administered expressly for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription pain killers. Vivitrol is an extended-release version of the drug Naltrexone, which one can get through a monthly injection. It is not habit forming, and is what is known as an antagonist. When an individual is adminstered Vivitrol, it cuts off the receptors that would normally be activated by alcohol or opioids, so when an individual drinks alcohol or takes opioids they basically can't get high or drunk.

There are certain safety measures that should be be taken before an individual is administered Vivitrol. First off, a client who plans to start Vivitrol needs to have abstained from opioids for a minimum of seven to ten days. This is including clients who are participating in opioid maintenance therapy and are taking medications like Buprenorphine or Methadone. For a heroin abuser or a person who has been on Methadone for several years, abrupt cessation is brutal, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for at least seven days in order to start Vivitrol.

These meds must be used as part of a treatment program in Mount Union which also offers medical supervision, individual therapy, and group therapy. Talk with your therapist or Dr. about how pharmacological tools can help you maintain and build the sober life you want.
