Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Drug and Alcohol Rehab Programs - Muir, PA.

Vivitrol is a drug mainly administered to prevent drug or alcohol use and relapse, and is used specifically for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription pain killers. Vivitrol is an extended release type of the medication Naltrexone, that one can get via injection once a month. It isn't habit forming, and is what is known as an antagonist. When someone is adminstered Vivitrol, it blocks the receptors that would usually be triggered by alcohol or opioids, so when an individual drinks or takes opioids they basically can't get drunk or high.

There are certain precautions that should be be taken before an individual is administered Vivitrol. Firstly, a client who with the intent to start Vivitrol must have been off of opioids for at least 7-10 days. This includes people who are participating in opioid maintenance therapy and are being given meds like Buprenorphine or Methadone. For a heroin addict or someone who has been taking Methadone for several years, quitting quickly is very difficult, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for at least a week if they want to begin taking Vivitrol.

These drugs must be used in conjunction with a treatment program in Muir that also includes individual therapy, group therapy and medical supervision. Talk to your doctor or therapist about how pharmacological tools can help you build the sober life you want.
