Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Drug and Alcohol Treatment Centers - New Florence, PA.

Vivitrol is a medication used to prevent drug or alcohol abuse and relapse, and is used expressly for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription pain killers. Vivitrol is an extended-release version of the drug Naltrexone, which is available through a monthly injection. It is not addictive, and is what is known as an antagonist. When someone is adminstered Vivitrol, it blocks the receptors that would usually be triggered by opioids or alcohol, so when someone takes a drink of alcohol or takes opioids they basically can't get drunk or high.

There are particular precautions that should be be taken before an individual is administered Vivitrol. First off, a person who with the intent to start Vivitrol must have abstained from opioids for a minimum of 7-10 days. This is including clients who are involved in opioid maintenance therapy and are being given drugs such as Methadone or Buprenorphine. For a heroin abuser or someone who has been on Methadone for a long time, quitting quickly can be brutal, but withdrawal is something they will have to endure for a minimum of 7 days if they want to start Vivitrol.

These medications must be used as part of a treatment program in New Florence which also offers individual therapy, group therapy and medical supervision. Speak to your therapist or Dr. in regards to how pharmacological tools can help you build and maintain the drug-free life you want.
