Drug treatment services for the hearing impaired are offered in both an inpatient and outpatient basis. People with hearing impairment may be at a greater risk of addiction problems because of their handicap. Having a major impairment can be a root cause for discouragement, depression and apathy for both adults and adolescents who may turn to drugs or alcohol to deal with these feelings and emotions. Hearing impaired treatment services are available in North East to help resolve addiction for these clients, with ASL and other assistance which offers recovery and treatment information and education in writing so that clients aren't hindered from getting better because of their disability.
Substance abuse rehabilitation programs with full time staff to help the hearing impaired are the best facilities to consider. Some rehabs may only have part-time staff to interpret and assist hearing impaired clients, and this means hearing impaired clients won't benefit as much as everyone else and will miss out on essential activities they should be attending every day. There may be video presentations available which use sign language as well, which is also quite helpful.
There are organizations and agencies that provide hearing impaired people suffering with addiction with information and resources to find the recovery services they need. One of these is the Deaf Off Drugs and Alcohol (DODA).
