Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Alcohol and Drug Treatment Facilities - Port Allegany, PA.

Vivitrol is a drug used to prevent drug dependency and relapse, and is administered expressly for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription medications. Vivitrol is an extended release type of the drug Naltrexone, which one can get through a monthly injection. It isn't addictive, and is what is called an antagonist. When someone is adminstered Vivitrol, it blocks the receptors that would usually be triggered by alcohol or opioids, so when someone drinks or tries to get high on opioids they essentially cannot get high or drunk.

There are particular precautions that need to be taken before an individual is administered Vivitrol. First off, a client who plans to begin Vivitrol must have abstained from opioids for a minimum of 7-10 days. This is including people who are participating in opioid maintenance therapy and are taking meds such as Methadone or Buprenorphine. For a heroin addict or someone who has been taking Methadone for several years, abrupt cessation can be very difficult, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for a minimum of seven days in order to start Vivitrol.

These medications must be used in conjunction with a rehab program in Port Allegany which also includes individual therapy, group therapy and medical supervision. Speak to your therapist or Dr. in regards to how pharmacological aids can help you live the sober life you want.
