Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Drug and Alcohol Rehab Centers - Six Mile Run, PA.

Vivitrol is a med mainly administered to help prevent drug use and relapse, and is administered expressly for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription medications. Vivitrol is an extended-release type of the drug Naltrexone, which is available through a monthly injection. It is not addictive, and is what is called an antagonist. When an individual injects Vivitrol, it blocks the receptors that would normally be triggered by alcohol or opioids, so when an individual drinks alcohol or tries to get high on opioids they basically can't get drunk or high.

There are certain precautions that need to be taken before someone is administered Vivitrol. First off, an individual who with the intent to start Vivitrol needs to have abstained from opioids for at least 7-10 days. This is including people who are participating in opioid maintenance therapy and are being given drugs such as Methadone or Buprenorphine. For a heroin abuser or a person who has been taking Methadone for a long time, abrupt cessation can be brutal, but withdrawal is something they will have to endure for a minimum of 7 days if they want to begin taking Vivitrol.

These medications must be used as part of an addiction treatment program in Six Mile Run that also includes individual therapy, group therapy and medical supervision. Talk to your doctor or therapist in regards to how pharmacological aids can help you build and maintain the drug-free life you want.
