Drug treatment services for the hearing impaired are offered in both an inpatient and outpatient basis. People with hearing impairment may be at a greater risk of addiction disorders due to their impairment. Having a serious disability can be a source of distress, discouragement, depression, unhappiness and apathy for both adolescents and adults who could easily turn to alcohol or drugs to cope with these emotions. Hearing impaired services are available in Slippery Rock to help resolve addiction for these clients, with ASL and other assistance which includes recovery and treatment information and education in writing so that patients aren't inhibited from receiving help due to their impairment.
Drug rehabilitation facilities with full time staff to assist the hearing impaired are the most ideal programs to select. Some programs only have part-time staff to assist and interpret this demographic, which this means hearing impaired clients won't receive the same treatment as everyone else and will miss out on essential activities they should be participating in daily. There may be video presentations offered which utilize sign language as well, which is also very helpful.
There are organizations and agencies that supply hearing impaired people struggling with addiction with resources and information to find the recovery services they need. One is the Deaf Off Drugs and Alcohol (DODA).
