Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Alcohol and Drug Treatment Facilities - Southeastern, PA.

Vivitrol is a medication mainly administered to help prevent drug dependency and relapse, and is administered specifically for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription medications. Vivitrol is an extended release type of the drug Naltrexone, which is available through a monthly injection. It is not addictive, and is what is known as an antagonist. When an individual takes Vivitrol, it blocks the receptors that would normally be activated by alcohol or opioids, so when someone takes a drink of alcohol or takes opioids they basically cannot get high or drunk.

There are particular precautions that should be be taken before an individual begins treatment with Vivitrol. Firstly, an individual who plans to begin Vivitrol must have been off of opioids for a minimum of seven to ten days. This includes clients who are participating in opioid maintenance therapy and are taking drugs such as Methadone or Buprenorphine. For a heroin abuser or someone who has been on Methadone for a long time, abrupt cessation is very difficult, but withdrawal is something they will have to endure for at least a week in order to begin taking Vivitrol.

These drugs must be used as part of a treatment program in Southeastern which also offers medical supervision, individual therapy, and group therapy. Speak with your therapist or Dr. in regards to how pharmacological aids can help you live the sober life you want.
