Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Drug and Alcohol Treatment Facilities - St. Boniface, PA.

Vivitrol is a med used to prevent drug use and relapse, and is administered specifically for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription medications. Vivitrol is an extended-release version of the medication Naltrexone, that is available via injection once a month. It is not addictive, and is what is known as an antagonist. When an individual takes Vivitrol, it blocks the receptors that would normally be triggered by opioids or alcohol, so when someone drinks or tries to get high on opioids they essentially cannot get high or drunk.

There are particular safety measures that need to be taken before an individual begins treatment with Vivitrol. First off, someone who intends to start Vivitrol needs to have been off of opioids for at least 7-10 days. This includes people who are involved in opioid maintenance therapy and are being given medications like Methadone or Buprenorphine. For a heroin addict or a person who has been taking Methadone for several years, abrupt cessation can be brutal, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for at least 7 days if they want to start Vivitrol.

These meds must be used in conjunction with a treatment program in St. Boniface that also offers medical supervision, individual therapy, and group therapy. Talk with your doctor or therapist in regards to how pharmacological aids can help you build and maintain the drug and alcohol free life you want.
