Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Drug and Alcohol Rehab Centers - Strausstown, PA.

Vivitrol is a med mainly administered to help prevent drug abuse and relapse, and is used expressly for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription medications. Vivitrol is an extended-release type of the medication Naltrexone, which is available via injection once a month. It isn't addictive, and is what is called an antagonist. When an individual injects Vivitrol, it cuts off the receptors that would usually be activated by alcohol or opioids, so when an individual drinks alcohol or takes opioids they basically can't get drunk or high.

There are certain precautions that need to be taken before an individual begins treatment with Vivitrol. Firstly, an individual who intends to begin Vivitrol needs to have been off of opioids for a minimum of seven to ten days. This includes individuals who are involved in opioid maintenance therapy and are being given drugs like Buprenorphine or Methadone. For a heroin addict or someone who has been taking Methadone for several years, abrupt cessation can be brutal, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for a minimum of a week if they want to begin taking Vivitrol.

These meds must be used in conjunction with a treatment program in Strausstown which also includes medical supervision, individual therapy, and group therapy. Speak to your doctor or therapist about how pharmacological tools can help you build the sober life you want.
