Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Drug and Alcohol Rehabilitation Facilities - Summit Station, PA.

Vivitrol is a med mainly administered to prevent drug or alcohol dependency and relapse, and is used expressly for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription pain killers. Vivitrol is an extended-release type of the drug Naltrexone, that one can get via injection once a month. It is not addictive, and is what is called an antagonist. When an individual injects Vivitrol, it blocks the receptors that would normally be triggered by opioids or alcohol, so when an individual drinks or takes opioids they essentially can't get high or drunk.

There are certain safety measures that need to be taken before someone is administered Vivitrol. First off, someone who with the intent to begin Vivitrol must have been off of opioids for a minimum of seven to ten days. This includes individuals who are involved in opioid maintenance therapy and are taking meds like Methadone or Buprenorphine. For a heroin abuser or someone who has been taking Methadone for a long time, quitting quickly is brutal, but withdrawal is something they will have to endure for a minimum of a week in order to begin taking Vivitrol.

These medications must be used in conjunction with a treatment program in Summit Station which also includes individual therapy, group therapy and medical supervision. Talk to your therapist or Dr. about how pharmacological tools can help you maintain the drug and alcohol free life you want.
